
Hiring Temporary Positions
Temporary Faculty
Lecturer positions are offered on a course by course basis. For regular faculty positions or those not paid on a course by course basis, including visiting faculty, see the Hiring Regular Faculty page.
A temporary faculty (lecturer) appointment requires the following steps:
- Review and update/create job description for the position
- Creation and submittal of Request to Fill form for HR review
- Initial salary analysis and job analysis by HR
- Completion and approval of a Request to Fill form
- Post the position on CU Careers by HR
- Review of applicants by hiring authority
- Hiring authority provides names of applicants that do not meet requirements to HR Liaison to disposition and send correspondence
- Interviews with the supervisor or appointing authority
- Selection of a final candidate
- Reference checks for final candidate only (SkillSurvey and/or phone/email references)
- Make verbal offer
- Background check for final candidate only after verbal acceptance of offer
- Formal letter of offer routed after background check is completed with no concerns found
- Notification and disposition of all remaining candidates after closing date, including other finalists and remove posting from the web
Temporary University Staff
A university staff temporary position is limited to a 9-month appointment. Any position that will last up to the full 9-months will follow the steps outlined on the Hiring University Staff page. Any temporary position lasting 6 months or less requires the following steps, which are outlined in this section of the guide:
- Review and update/create job description for the position
- Creation and submittal of Request to Fill form for HR review
- Initial salary analysis and job analysis by HR
- Completion and approval of a Request to Fill form
- Post the position on CU Careers by HR
- Temporary hire applies to requisition
- Make verbal offer
- Background check for final candidate only after verbal acceptance of offer
- Formal letter of offer routed after background check is completed with no concerns found
Temporary Classified Staff
A classified staff temporary position is limited to a 9-month appointment. Any position that will last up to the full 9-months will follow the steps outlined on the Hiring Classified Staff page. Any temporary position lasting 6 months or less requires the following steps, which are outlined in this section of the guide:
- Review and update/create position description for the position
- Creation and submittal of Request to Fill form for HR review
- HR determines the appropriate salary according to state guidelines and salary analysis
- Completion and approval of a Request to Fill form
- Post the position on CU Careers by HR
- Temporary hire applies to the position
- Make verbal offer
- Background checks for final candidate only after verbal acceptance of offer
- Formal letter of offer routed after background check is completed with no concerns found
