Hiring Temporary Positions

 

 

UCCS requires an open search for all positions, including those that are temporary. Instructions for hiring temporary faculty (lecturers), temporary university staff, and temporary classified staff are outlined on this page.

The instruction on this page apply to temporary university and classified positions lasting up to six months. For positions planned to last longer, see the Hiring University Staff or Hiring Classified Staff pages. Lecturer positions are offered on a course by course basis. For regular faculty positions or those not paid on a course by course basis, including visiting faculty, see the Hiring Regular Faculty page.

Lecturers

Temporary Faculty

Lecturer positions are offered on a course by course basis. For regular faculty positions or those not paid on a course by course basis, including visiting faculty, see the Hiring Regular Faculty page.

A temporary faculty (lecturer) appointment requires the following steps:

  1. Review and update/create job description for the position
  2. Creation and submittal of Request to Fill form for HR review
  3. Initial salary analysis and job analysis by HR
  4. Completion and approval of a Request to Fill form
  5. Post the position on CU Careers by HR
  6. Review of applicants by hiring authority
  7. Hiring authority provides names of applicants that do not meet requirements to HR Liaison to disposition and send correspondence
  8. Interviews with the supervisor or appointing authority
  9. Selection of a final candidate
  10. Reference checks for final candidate only (SkillSurvey and/or phone/email references)
  11. Make verbal offer
  12. Background check for final candidate only after verbal acceptance of offer
  13. Formal letter of offer routed after background check is completed with no concerns found
  14. Notification and disposition of all remaining candidates after closing date, including other finalists and remove posting from the web

Temporary University Staff

A university staff temporary position is limited to a 9-month appointment. Any position that will last up to the full 9-months will follow the steps outlined on the Hiring University Staff page. Any temporary position lasting 6 months or less requires the following steps, which are outlined in this section of the guide:

  1. Review and update/create job description for the position 
  2. Creation and submittal of Request to Fill form for HR review
  3. Initial salary analysis and job analysis by HR
  4. Completion and approval of a Request to Fill form
  5. Post the position on CU Careers by HR
  6. Temporary hire applies to requisition 
  7. Make verbal offer
  8. Background check for final candidate only after verbal acceptance of offer
  9. Formal letter of offer routed after background check is completed with no concerns found

Classified

Temporary Classified Staff

A classified staff temporary position is limited to a 9-month appointment. Any position that will last up to the full 9-months will follow the steps outlined on the Hiring Classified Staff page. Any temporary position lasting 6 months or less requires the following steps, which are outlined in this section of the guide: 

  1. Review and update/create position description for the position  
  2. Creation and submittal of Request to Fill form for HR review 
  3. HR determines the appropriate salary according to state guidelines and salary analysis
  4. Completion and approval of a Request to Fill form 
  5. Post the position on CU Careers by HR 
  6. Temporary hire applies to the position
  7. Make verbal offer
  8. Background checks for final candidate only after verbal acceptance of offer
  9. Formal letter of offer routed after background check is completed with no concerns found
