Title Definition Further Clarification
DIRECTOR (0) Directors are responsible for the ongoing leadership and oversight of a department, including the development of strategies and processes which contribute to the University and/or campus mission and accountability for services provided. Directors are responsible and accountable for the analysis of fiscal and human resources required to achieve department objectives including hiring, compensation, termination, and performance management of subordinate employees. This levels are responsible for the strategic direction for the department and are generally over departments that have a campus-wide impact or reach regarding the work that is done.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR (1) Associate Directors are responsible for working closely with the Director to manage a department or specific areas of a department. These positions recommend strategy, have responsibility for fiscal and/or human resources and have the authority to act on the Director's behalf.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (2) Assistant Directors have responsibility for projects, functions or processes within a department. These positions may recommend strategy and provide professional support to Directors and may have the authority to act on the Director's behalf. Assistant Directors typically supervise other staff but do not generally control the allocation of fiscal or human resources.
PROGRAM DIRECTOR (3) Program Directors are responsible for the ongoing leadership and oversight of a program or function, including the development of strategies and processes which contribute to the University and/or campus mission and accountability for services provided. These positions may or may not supervise others. These levels are either responsible for supervising multiple staff (Manager) or for the direction (fiscal and human resources) of smaller units or programs that may not engage with the campus overall (Program Director) or set up strategies and processes for a smaller unit/program (Program Manager).
MANAGER (4) Managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of functional work units, including the development and implementation of processes consistent with college, school or departmental strategies and processes. Managers are responsible for the supervision of professional and support staff.
PROGRAM MANAGER (5) Program Managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of a program, function or work unit, including the development and implementation of processes consistent with college, school or departmental strategies and processes. These positions may or may not supervise others.
PRINCIPAL PROFESSIONAL (6) Principal Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed at an advanced or expert level. These levels are individual contributors and classification into these positions vary based on the scope of knowledge and experience they have within the discipline or profession. Professionals have a limited scope of responsibility or knowledge of the work, Senior Professionals are the fully competent level and have a broad knowledge of the profession and can address what are considered complex issues. The Principle Professional is the 'expert or advanced' professional. These are individuals that Directors and leaders will go to because of the expertise in a specific area. These positions should be limited as they are the advanced professional.
SENIOR PROFESSIONAL (7) Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed fully independently.
PROFESSIONAL (8) Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the professional level, duties may be more limited in scope, may be performed with guidance and direction from other professionals, or may be performed in a training and development capacity.
ENTRY PROFESSIONAL (9) Entry professionals are positions designed to develop professional skills through the performance of entry-level professional work that allows the incumbent to gain additional knowledge, skills and experience in the occupational field or for completion of an advanced degree, professional licensure, certification, or future professional advancement. The work is directly supervised by professionals in the field or other senior staff members of related disciplines.
